China is a beautiful and diverse country in Asia. The country has a rich history and culture that makes it an ideal travel destination. The size of the country makes it a country of extremes; from bustling metropolises such as Shanghai and Hong Kong, to beautiful nature and UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the Great Wall of China. One of the most fascinating countries we have ever visited!
Face the Great Wall of China
This is one of the most famous constructions in the world and one of the seven new wonders of the world. An absolute highlight of China. The wall can be visited from Beijing, keep in mind that it often is very crowded. Curious about how we experienced the Great Wall of China? Read the Beijing travelogue with our experiences here.
Check out the Terracotta Army in Xi'An
This is also a very popular attraction in China; the terracotta army just outside Xi’An. This army is made up of thousands of pottery soldiers, horsemen and horses spread over three different locations. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is well worth a visit while traveling through China.
Enjoy the view in Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a fascinating city with stunning buildings and beautiful nature. Hong Kong is where Eastern and Western influences meet, resulting in a rich culture and an impressive history. At an altitude of 554 meters above the city, you have a beautiful view of the skyscrapers and the harbor from Victoria Peak.
Visit the casinos in Macau
Macau is also known as the Las Vegas of Asia, with dozens of gigantic casinos. In addition, Macau still has many visible Portuguese influences in the historic center. This makes it a special destination in Asia. Also read our ultimate travel guide to Macau.
Visit the Forbidden City in Beijing
Besides the Great Wall of China, there are a number of impressive sights in the Chinese capital Beijing. An example is the Forbidden City located in front of Tiananmen Square, where at least 1 million people can congregate at the same time. This is also the largest palace complex in the world.
Admire the Shanghai skyline
As the main trading city in China, Shanghai has acquired an international character. This city has impressive contrasts between the colonial neighborhoods in The Bund and the beautiful skyline full of iconic skyscrapers. Especially when the sun sets, you have a beautiful view of the colorful futuristic buildings.
Take a trip to Tibet
In the west of China lies the region of Tibet, an inspiring and special place full of traditions and culture. A bit of luck is needed to enter Tibet, as China regularly closes its borders. The spirituality, the beauty and the high mountains make it a unique destination.
Stroll the city walls of Xi'An
Besides the impressive Terracotta army, Xian has another unique place of interest; one of the oldest city walls in China. This wall has largely remained intact, and can therefore also be visited. The perimeter of the wall is more than 14 kilometers and there are 4 main gates. We also walked over these city walls in January 2016. Read all about our experiences in Xi’an here.
Visit the Jiuzhaigou National Park
Jiuzhaigou National Park is considered one of the most beautiful natural areas in China. The national park is also included on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is perfect for an active hike. There are even pandas in the park, but due to the size of the park, the chance that you will encounter one is small.
Visit the pandas in Chengdu
As the national treasure of China, the Giant Panda should of course not be missing from this list! In the region around Chengdu, these impressive animals live in special conservation parks. A visit to one of these parks should certainly not be missed during your trip.
