In Hong Kong people travel a lot by public transport. One of the most commonly used modes of transport in Hong Kong is the MTR metro. MTR is an abbreviation for Mass Transit Railway. There are also buses, taxis and boats. The MTR network is known as one of the best metro networks in the world.
The MTR network runs throughout the country by means of ten different lines. All stations are spacious and clean, and the information is clear. The MTR is also easy to use for tourists. The subways themselves often run every few minutes, so you never have to wait long. In addition, all signs are in English, and the costs are relatively low.
However, keep in mind that it can be very busy during rush hour. The metro is used by as many as five million people every day. There is a chance that you have to stand against other people in the metro during the busiest hours, but standing is also well arranged with handles.
The Airport Express is also part of the MTR network. This metro will get you from the airport to Hong Kong Island in just 24 minutes. This train journey will set you back only HKD 115 per person.
Paying for the MTR is easy; you can do this with the Octopus Card. Read more about the Octopus Card and how to use it in the MTR here.
